The History of Mead
Mead has been brewed for millennia. It is the alcoholic drink with the oldest history. With archeological evidence proving its existence back over 9000 years ago, mead has been produced and consumed on nearly every inhabited continent.
Mead in Ancient Chinese Poetry
One famous literary mention of Mead was by the poet Su Shi (苏轼）in the Song Dynasty, in the year 1082. A translation of the poem is as follows :
Song of Honey Wine
By Su Shi (Northern Song Dynasty)
Pearls make the broth, fine jade the brew,
In Sixth-month heat, the farmers' sweat drips through.
But this is better — fragrance from spring jars that rise,
Where bees do ploughing work and flowers give their rice.
On the first day, gentle bubbling — fish spitting foam;
On the second, dizzying clarity — the light finds home.
On the third, open the jar — the whole town fills with scent;
Pour swiftly into silver flasks — no strainer need be bent.
A hundred cash for one full dipper — thick and deep, no sound;
Sweet dew with a slight turbidity — like pure cream, clear and round.
Have you not seen the bees south of the garden, falling thick as rain?
Heaven itself commands they brew, to make this old man drunk again.
This old man — poor to the very bone for years;
Begging for rice — what has he ever gotten but tears?
Ten thousand things in this world — all drifting, vast, and slow.
